In April 1963, under the leadership of the late Elder J.E. Wooten, Missionary Gertrude McMullen brought a spiritual revival to Paradise COGIC. During this revival, our Pastor was saved along with 17 other souls, many of who are church members here today. He accepted God’s call on his life into the ministry and faithfully served as a minister for many years at Paradise. God later called him away to Washington Chapel with his father-in-law, Elder Nathaniel Swift. He hosted a 2-week revival there, and God spoke to him during that revival and extended his time well beyond those first two weeks. God them called him to become a Pastor of his own church.
Pastor Hopkins left Washington Chapel with 13 members and became Pastor and Founder of New Covenant. The name New Covenant was given to Pastor Hopkins as found in Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 8:7-13. The name summarizes the vision that God gave him which speaks of the NEW COVENANT. For the Lord said in these scriptures that He would put His laws into their minds, and write them in their hearts. He will be a God to them, and they shall be a people to Him. God commanded them to know Him, from the least to the greatest. The first service was held in his sister’s home (Thelma Beard) on April 1, 1990.
With 34 members, we moved to our current location on January 29, 1995. The original building was on 5 acres and consisted of a 3-bedroom house and an attached garage that we initially used as a sanctuary. We torn down the garage and built our current sanctuary in 1995. It seats approximately 150 and has a 30-seat choir platform. We converted the living room in the former house to a fellowship hall and connected the new sanctuary to the rest of the house by building a dining room in between the old and new building. This put everything under one roof. The bedrooms were converted to classrooms and office space. We later purchased adjacent property on both sides of the church and currently sit on 26.7 acres of land. Pastor Hopkins is an outdoorsman whose passion is working and laboring with the land. We have enough land to stretch out and see his vision come to pass.
Pastor Hopkins took a gigantic spiritual step when he joined Holiness Outreach Ministries Association, Inc. (HOMA) under the leadership of Presiding Bishop Thomas K. Bethany. Our church joined HOMA along with other small churches in the Memphis area to offer support to each other and realize an even greater vision and greater work for the Lord. On August 21, 2005, we were blessed to witness Presiding Bishop Bethany consecrate our very own Pastor Hopkins as he became Bishop Aron B. Hopkins. What a glorious occasion it was for all the members of New Covenant to witness this remarkable transformation as we saw our Pastor make the ultimate commitment and step of faith to accept the position of Bishop with HOMA. He is steadfast and unmovable in his faith, and he has always lived a life of precept and example. After he accepted the courageous and self-sacrificing position of Bishop, he was called to an even greater level of servant hood.
Bishop Hopkins is truly a man after God’s own heart, and we are absolutely assured that when the time comes, the Lord will say, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” In addition to the church family that Bishop Hopkins is so dearly devoted to, he is also quite a family man at home. He has been married to his wonderful helpmeet, First Lady Geneva Hopkins since 1971. They have been blessed with 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. He is truly a loving and faithful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. But more importantly, he is a man that has been called by God to do a work, a work of honor to glorify God’s kingdom and win souls to Chri
